Konawaena's tenacious defense created plenty of offense again, and it brought the Wildcats one step closer to their third state title in six years.

Freshman guard Lia Galdeira tallied 17 points and 10 steals as Konawaena beat Baldwin 50-28 in the state quarterfinals of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I Girls Basketball State Championships Wednesday at Kaimuki High.

Konawaena (13-0), the BIIF Division I champion and the No. 2 seed in the state tournament, will play No. 3 seed and Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Farrington (19-1) in a 7 p.m. state semifinal Thursday at Neal S. Blaisdell Center. The winner will play in the state championship game at the same time on Friday.

Against the Bears (11-5), the Maui Interscholastic League runner-up, Konawaena bolted out to a 21-11 lead after one quarter and steadily increased its advantage as the game progressed. Wildcats assistant coach Donny Awa said his team started utilizing an aggressive full-court, on-the-ball pressure defense toward the end of the first quarter that rattled Baldwin the rest of the game.

Konawaena forced 26 Baldwin turnovers.

"We were putting a lot of pressure on the ball, and most of the points came off of steals by our defense,'' said Awa, who estimated that 80 percent of Konawaena's points came off the Bears' turnovers.

Senior guard Kara Hanato-Smith scored nine points, and freshman guard Makayla Awa added eight in a game in which every player logged playing time. However, Donny Awa noted the Wildcats did not shoot well Wednesday. Konawaena was 39 percent from the field (22-of-57) and 26 percent from the free throw line (4-of-15).

"We're going to have our find our stroke,'' he said.

Senior guard Shauna Ah Yen led Baldwin with nine points.

Baldwin 11 4 11 2 -- 28

Konawaena 21 10 14 5 -- 50
