Freshmen and free throws stole the show as Konawaena beat Waiakea 55-41 in a girls Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I basketball showdown.

The matchup between Konawaena's two talented freshmen -- Dawnyelle Awa and Lia Galdeira -- and Waiakea's pair of standouts -- junior Kamie Imai and senior Kanisha Bello -- ended as a scoring draw on Thursday night at the Warriors' gym.

Awa scored 16 points, and Galdeira added 14 to lead the Wildcats (7-0), who are marching toward the BIIF regular season title, which includes one of the league's two state tournament berths.

Imai scored 17 points, Bello had 16 and Amanda Hubbell added eight to account for all of the scoring for the Warriors (4-3), the defending Division I champions.

Hubbell knocked down a 3-pointer with under four minutes left to hand Waiakea the lead.

But Konawaena, which suffered a scoring drought early in the fourth quarter, sank 13 free throws with 2 minutes, 43 seconds left to secure the lead and close out the thriller.

Konawaena 8 20 9 18 -- 55

Waiakea 9 10 11 11 -- 41
