Kara Hanato-Smith scored 22 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Konawaena to a 53-36 win over Honokaa on Saturday night.

It was the lone Big Island Interscholastic Federation girls basketball game on Saturday.

"We came out flat, and Kona came out hot," Honokaa coach Lane Guzman said. "(Kona coach) Bobbie (Awa) had her girls ready tonight. We couldn't match their intensity."

Hanato-Smith, a senior sharpshooter, hit two treys and had nine points in the first quarter as the visiting Wildcats (1-0) grabbed a 16-1 lead and carried a 27-8 advantage into the intermission.

"We did a better job in the second half," Guzman said. "Maku Torres gave us a big spark, and we were able to move Kaylene (Kanekoa) back to the point to run the offense."

Konawaena outscored the hosts 16-10 in the third period before the Dragons (0-2) held an 18-10 advantage over the final eight minutes.

Freshman guard Dawnyelle Awa followed Hanato-Smith with 10 points. Freshman standout Lia Galdeira did not play while sitting out with an injury.

April Cano topped Honokaa with 10 points, and the versatile Kanekoa added nine.

In the junior-varsity contest, Honokaa defeated Konawaena 41-35. Chanice Levita had nine points to lead the Dragons. Amanda Varron led the Wildcats with 11 points.

Konawaena 16 11 16 10 -- 53

Honokaa 1 7 10 18 -- 36
